Leap of love
An Indian love story about the couple who dared the forbidden to step out into the golden light.
They only had twenty minutes to leave if they wanted to be together. Yet, he hesitated to step out of the dark.
She looked back at his form in the shade of trees. Her body had turned pale blue in the open. But their joined hands remained suspended in the middle.
She could see the golden light coming towards them.
He flinched at the sounds coming from behind.
The crawls of ground animals, creaking of the gates and clang of metal against metal as they came for them. Like they had for every other couple.
Her eyes begged him to take that step and join her. His held unshed tears.
She tugged him towards her. The screeches of predators in the air deafened them till they had to cover their ears. Blood ran down the other side.
They still didn’t let go of each other.
She sobbed as vines circled around his legs. He let go of her hand before she could come towards him as he fell deeper into the dark.
She followed him inside. Her tears burnt the crawlers as she climbed over them to reach her lover.
The wave of steel was coming towards them. She reached for his hand to pull him out, and got his fingers. Her cries quietened the roars of beasts.
She dragged him out with the hand. His left one was gone with the vines. It latched on to the spilling blood, forgetting his other parts.
They ran towards the end. The blue was shrinking.
A sword came from behind and cut her straight across the back.
She didn’t stop, and jumped over the narrow trench, taking him with her. He was the first one to step into the golden light. So, she turned to ashes holding the last of him in her own hands.
The monsters turned into ghosts to go back.
All that remained on the ground was a few drops of the lovers’ blood before the earth turned it brown.

It's very evocative of the dual nature of mankind. It called to me, outdoor nature against civilization.
