The sun and moon were once lovers
The tale of the greatest love ever, told to a wide eyed child
“The sun and moon were once lovers” The lady’s smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Really, Amma?” The wide-eyed child placed her elbows on knees to support her head.
“Like Heer Ranja, Laila Majnu, your Jack and rose.” She pinched the child’s nose that was mostly stuck to the little box which changed colors and spoke like humans.
“Then, what happened?” She placed her hands on the ground and leaned forward.
“What happens to all of them. They were told they couldn’t be together.” Amma leaned back in her seat.
“But why did they listen to them?” The little girl frowned.
“They didn’t. The moon lost all its light, the sun burnt.” She shook her head.
“So, they won?” The girl grinned in delight, perking up from the ground.
“No, my child. They had no choice.” She pursed her lips at the life’s truth.
“Is that why they play hide and seek every day?” The poor child asked, her voice now smaller than her height.
“It hurts them to see each other. So, they take turns to visit you.” The spotted hands took her red face lovingly.
“Do they still love each other?” Tears filled her eyes.
“Let me tell you a secret, my child.” This time she leaned forward.
“What secret, Amma?”
“The sun never stopped shining its light on moon. And the moon never burns brighter than its lover.” Her eyes shined at the rebellion coursing through her veins.
“I wish they were still together.” The child pouted.
“They will be. At the end of this world when there are no boundaries, no beings and no beliefs, they will meet and then no one will be able to tell them apart.” She looked in the other direction.
“Good. Where are you going?” She nodded her head at the decision, waiting for it to come sooner.
“It’s time for my sun to come.” This time the smile reflected through the eyes before it reached her lips.
