What does the word Diwali mean? What is it celebrating?

It is actually called Deepawali. In Ramayana, the Indian epic, it is celebrated when Lord Ram came back to Ayodhya after a fourteen year exile and winning the war against Raavan. So, it is the celebration of triumph of good over evil.

I was wondering if it was more like the Feng Sui of New Years, when you clean everything before the new year starts, so that you don't sweep out all the good luck of the new year. You would do many of the same things, with cleaning, and fixing clothing, and fixing broken things.

But, I can see from that, that it is not. But a wonderful celebration of good and victory!

Yes! We also clean deeply like what people call the spring cleaning, but it is to welcome the God and Goddess of wealth and prosperity.
