“They don’t look that fresh.” Kerry looked critically at the bouquet of roses from Ecuador as Oliver stepped out from the magical door.
Oliver looked at the bunch with his brows furrowed. He stepped back to bring in a fresh one.
He came out to see his younger brother munching on a cookie Mia had given to him in the morning. It had taken him an hour to go around the city and buy the best bunch. This must be his fourth cookie. He shook his head at the sweet tooth Kerry inherited from their mother.
The younger one took it from Oliver for inspection, “These will do. Come on, you need to get ready.” He took the bouquet with him. He had already laid out his brother’s best clothes for his date to the teacher.
“And you need to go to sleep. It is seven after all.” Oliver teased him from behind as he picked up the shirt to change. He was vibrating with excitement. Good thing he went earlier for the roses. They would be the perfect gift for the lady who took his heart since he met her at Kerry’s guardian meeting.
He had already made the trip to Indonesia for the nutmeg she asked for. His mouth was salivating a bit at the thought of those heavenly Nutella biscuits she would bring the next day.
“Mrs. Lockmaster will be here for you soon. Don’t give her any trouble, Kerry. I mean it.” His younger brother thought he didn’t need a babysitter now that he was a ten-year-old man. He had a tendency to drive the sweet women crazy with his incessant questioning and borderline rude observations that he made out loud.
“Moi!” He pointed at himself in mock shock. At his brother’s look, he sighed, “I like her fine. She and I will watch her favorite television shows.”
“I will be back by ten tops.” Oliver sprayed some perfume on his shirt.
“What? Are you crazy. I talk to my girlfriend more than that, and we have to study too.”
“You have a girlfriend?” Oliver turned around in shock.
“I would like to keep my personal life private.” The young man said with a serious look.
Oliver sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “Just. Just please don’t cause any trouble while I am gone, okay?”
“You be back by no earlier than twelve, okay?” Kerry crossed his arms over his little chest.
“And how would you know when I come back?” Oliver raised an eyebrow as he copied his action.
“I have my ways.” He was sure Beth would tell him if he somehow fell asleep. They were both in on setting up this date. She was the one who actually suggested Mia to Kerry after Oliver had to leave him with the old woman on his monthly visit to the main city. He had to pick up some of the stuff for shop.
Oliver rolled his eyes, heading to the door when he heard the doorbell ring. He picked up his jacket and was followed out by the little devil carrying the roses.
“Don’t you look dashing?” Mrs. Lockmaster pinched his cheeks as soon as he let her in, “Oh! You will need more time from me if you keep this up.”
Oliver blushed deep, “Thank you Mrs. lockmaster, I will be back soon. Please try and put him to bed at ten.” He looked over his shoulder to see his brother frowning, “And try and get out who he is dating.” He whispered the last part in her ear, earning a gasp in return. He would like to be prepared to be beaten up if it was the Sherrif’s daughter.
Kerry pushed the rosed in his hand as he wedged themselves between them, “Can we make the pasta, Mrs. Lockmaster?” He pushed his foot down on his brother’s to hurry him out.
“Of course, darling.” She melted at his innocent eyes, “Let’s go.”
Oliver was about to tell her that he had prepared dinner for both of them and it was in the oven when the doorbell rang again. A frown took over his face.
His jaw dropped at seeing Mia there, “Wh…What?”
“I thought I should surprise you.”
He shut the door behind him to stop the noisy beings from getting her uncomfortable. He rubbed the back of his head, lost at words, “I should have been the one picking you up.”
They heard taps at the window. Kerry and Beth were glued to the glass, their eyes bouncing between the couple while Kerry gestured wildly to the bouquet in Oliver’s hands.
Mia chuckled and waved at them while her date gave her the flowers in all his flustered glory, “I hope you like them.”
“They are lovely.” And bigger than the ones they had at local flower shop. Maybe the owner brought these out for rare occasions, “I don’t want them to wilt while we go.”
“I can put them in the vase for you. You can them home afterwards.” Beth was already at the door taking the bouquet from her hand followed by Kerry who had brought out a huge vase.
They were back at the window by the time the couple made their way to Oliver’s car.
Oliver felt a burning as he helped her inside the car. Not only because he was holding her hand, but because of the bracelet she wore. His hand jerked backward, making her eyes widen in question.
He looked at her in shock. But then he shook his head as if to shake the thought off. It was probably static electricity. He gave her a smile and went around to sit in the driver seat.
He missed the way she stiffened at his action and how she slid her sleeves further down to hide the last gift from her mother.
If you don’t want to miss out on the next part,
